A large-screen TV has been the centrepiece of Kenyan living rooms for decades. But smart projectors are changing that calculation — delivering screen sizes that no reasonably priced TV can match, in a device you can move from room to room or take to a friend's place. Whether one is right for you depends on a few important factors.

What a Smart Projector Actually Delivers

Modern compact smart projectors project images ranging from 60 to 120 inches diagonally onto any white or light-coloured wall or a dedicated screen. At a price of KSh 8,999 to KSh 9,500, you can get a device with HD projection, USB and HDMI connectivity, wireless streaming support, and a built-in focus dial — features that were significantly more expensive even three years ago.

The image quality is good in a dim or dark environment. This is the most important variable: projectors require ambient light control to look their best. A bright living room during the day will wash out the image. At night, with curtains closed, the result can be genuinely impressive.

Where Projectors Beat TVs

Screen size at low cost: A 90-inch TV costs several hundred thousand shillings in Kenya. A projector and a white wall can deliver the same diagonal measurement for under KSh 10,000. For movie nights and sports viewing, this size difference is significant.

Portability: You can move a projector between rooms, take it to a friends' place, or set it up outdoors for a garden movie night. A 65-inch TV cannot do any of these things.

Presentation use: For business presentations, church setups, or community events where a large display is needed, a projector is far more practical than a TV.

Where TVs Beat Projectors

Bright environments: Modern 4K TVs are bright enough for daytime viewing in a lit room. Most affordable projectors are not.

Simplicity: A TV works in any room condition immediately. A projector requires a dark room, a suitable surface, and distance from the wall (typically 2 to 3 metres for a large image).
